(54) METHOD FOR APPLYING GAIN CONTROL SIGNAL TO VARIABLE GAIN POWER AMPLIFIER

(57)Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for applying gain control feedback signals to a RF amplifier in a transmission device such as a cell phone.
SOLUTION: As for application of cell phones, the level of transmission is set by a base station. In a cell phone, there is used the transmission level received from the base station for its selection of couplers 22, 24, 26, and 28 to detect the output power of the power amplifier 20, and for setting up the gain of the power amplifier. According to this arrangement, a coupler can be selected from multiple couplers to realize a desired sensitivity and linearity of the coupler input for every part of the output power range of the power amplifier 20.
